Los Angeles duo Crushed announce their signing to Ghostly International and the first vinyl pressing of their 2023 debut EP, extra life. A love letter to ‘90s radio, the first collaboration from musicians Bre Morell and Shaun Durkan finds them tuning a shared taste for maximalist dream pop. Open-hearted hooks and melodic riffs move through a haze of breakbeats, spliced sound design, and distortion. Faithful yet fluid in its channeling of golden age alt-rock, Britpop, trip-hop, and electronica, there’s a refreshing freedom to the sound, which quickly resonated with fans and critics upon initial release. They filled an audible moodboard with ‘90s classics from the likes of Natalie Imbruglia, Sneaker Pimps, and The Sundays, songs that transported them back to places of comfort and discovery; Morell’s memories of a metallic, lavender boombox that dispatched past sounds from a world beyond her Houston suburbia, and Durkan, in his mom’s car on the way to band practice. Anders Trentemoller released The Last Resort in 2006, and the groundbreaking album, praised for its astonishing composition and sound design, is as breathtaking as ever. Conveying a wide range of emotions, the 9 instrumentals on the LP are characterized by subtle melodic miniatures, dreamy ambiences, dusty beats, and driving groove-excursions. They are electronic productions but incorporate a variety of acoustic instruments, which add an organic feel to the overall sound. While the dance framework—techno, tech house, etc—is present at large, the tracks are not necessarily geared toward the dancefloor. Rather, the album remains introspective throughout, and the vibe is closer to a soundtrack for a film than something you'll hear during a night out. Speaking on the project, Trentemoller says, it reflects my life, my thoughts, my needs, my insecurities, my longings. It's personal, constantly shifting in mood, and contain calm as well as stirring moments, with some of the highlights being Miss You, Take Me Into Your Skin and Into the Trees.

This Is The Sea is the third album by The Waterboys. Released in September 1985 and includes the classic single, The Whole of The Moon, along with other tracks, Don't Bang The Drum, The Pan Within and Old England. Considered by critics to be the finest album of their early rock-orientated sound, described as 'epic' and 'a defining moment' in the bands ongoing career. This new clear vinyl edition is a companion piece to the (also) forthcoming deluxe box set '1985', the making of the This Is The Sea album. Fans say this is French rebel icon Serge Gainsbourg's masterpiece. And it's got beats. Although broken into a few different movements, Histoire De Melody Nelson is a singular piece of work held together with Serge's gravel lyrics, a recurring tar-pit bass and the story of Melody Nelson. The album is bookended by Melody and Cargo Culte which both utilize the album's centerpiece- that haunting bass that you will recognize from the Beatnuts' Superbad. En Melody also deserves mention for the great intro and controlled spazz guitar work (sampled by De La). Serge was a legend - banned in many countries for his blatant sexual and political messages, loved by women despite having a head like a cabbage, always centered in controversy and usually producing interesting work. In Serge's later years, he attended an awards show and told Whitney Houston I want to fuck you on live TV. ODB would be proud. Recommended.
