Description

An interesting pair of Brass Candelabra made to be fixed into position. The Candelabra are not balanced to free stand, with the disc base too small to offer stability. Instead it has 3 screw holes to fix each Candelabra into position. This points to them being made for use on board ship or a similar place where it is a benefit to not be able to move them. The scroll arms swing, giving you some flexibility to adjust your lighting. The arms are removable, as part of their construction, each held to the central column by a finial shaped nut and bolt passing through collars to the arm and column. Apart from one, the arms are numbered from 2 to 4. The columns are seamed and the underside of the disc base is stamped W.T. & S with their star logo for William Tonks of Birmingham. Tonks were good brass founders who, it is believed, took over Matthew Boulton's factory. For modern use, this pair of Candelabra could be fitted to a turned wooden base etc. to allow them to be moveable, alternatively they could be screwed into position. Mid 19th Century.Maximum size is given.
