Austral Aurora — MUSEO MARÍTIMO DE USHUAIA

A self-sustaining museum, which does not count on state aid, but on the private sector and especially on tourists -in 50 percent foreigners-, defines the management of the Ushuaia Maritime Museum , which operates in the building of the former Prison of Reincidents of Tierra del Fuego, an unmissable attraction for those who visit the island.

In 12 thousand square meters, collections that illustrate the maritime history of the region, the Antarctic expeditions, the life and customs of the Yagán people, life in the Patagonian ranches and the pioneers are exhibited.

But perhaps the most captivating, is the history of the prison, from its creation as the first prison in Tierra del Fuego, in 1896, until its final closure, in 1947.

The visitor who goes through the pavilions and cells will have a very vivid idea of ​​how the days of the inmates, the punishments or the forced labor, in a distant and escaped prison passed in that distant end of the Earth. , it is said, only by sea.
