Description

ITL 321 | Intro to Italian Literature: Love and LiesDr. Rebecca FalkoffTTH 2:00PM-3:30PMThe survey will cover major works and movements of Italian literature through the complementary lenses of love and lies. We begin with selections by the “three crowns” of Italian literature, Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio, and a consideration of how these medieval writers construct authorial personas moved by love. Studying texts of a range of genres, including theater, epic, lyric, short stories, and novels, we will encounter some of the most affecting passages in Italian literature and some of the most devoted and deluded lovers ever to be crossed by cruel stars. Our readings will pose perennial questions like whether it is better to know difficult truths than to live loving lies.
